As many of you will be aware, the government recently announced that dental practices in England will be allowed to reopen from the 8th June.
Our primary concern when reopening our practice will be the safety of our patients and our staff.
We are desperate to see our patients again and provide the care we normally do, but we must carry this out without putting you, our patients, and our staff at risk.
When will I be able to have a dental appointment?
There are a number of protocols that MUST be completed before we can safely reopen the practice. For this reason, our reopening date may be delayed slightly.
In the 10 days’ notice that we have been given to reopen, these are some of the actions we need to complete to ensure the safety of our patients and staff:
• Source and purchase the necessary personal protective equipment (PPE). This is not the PPE that dental practices normally use and there is currently a huge global and local demand for such PPE, which can make finding such PPE difficult.
• Carry out facemask fit testing for all our staff to ensure the facemasks we use are effective in reducing the risk of transmission.
• Carry out staff training on all the latest policies that will ensure patient safety.
• Implement all the policies and protocols that will ensure the practice as a whole is able to see patients without putting their health at risk.
Such examples include the installation of a protective screen at reception, re-arranging of the waiting room and the practice layout to ensure social distancing can be maintained, carrying out new risk assessments, and preparing the individual surgeries to meet all operating procedures.
This is an incredible amount of change that needs to be implemented in the short 10 days that we have been given. For this reason, it’s possible that the practice will not be able to see patients from the 8th June. We are working really hard to get the practice open as soon as possible in a way that prioritises our patient’s health and oral care.
How will I know when the practice is open again?

What appointments will be available when you first reopen?
The reopening of the dental practices and the treatments we offer will be gradually phased. When we first reopen, we will be seeing emergency appointments only and no aerosol generating procedures (AGP’s). AGP’s involve the use of the dental drill and have a higher risk of viral transmission. These appointments will be gradually introduced at a later date.
We would like to reinforce again that we are working really hard to get the practice open as soon as possible in a safe manner. We appreciate your patience and understanding in these trying times and look forward to seeing you all soon.
