How teeth whitening works
Read on to learn about why our teeth stain in the first place and how teeth whitening can solve this.
Why do teeth stain in the first place?
The crown of a tooth is made up of three parts. The inner pulp, which is surrounded by the dentine layer, and the outer enamel layer.
The enamel layer is porous. This allows staining elements from foods and drinks that we consume to penetrate the enamel layer of teeth.
With time, this process results in the staining of teeth.
What are the common causes of teeth staining?
From the foods and drinks we consume, to our daily habits, below are some of the reasons why teeth stain.
• Smoking. Hookah/shisha also contributes to staining.
• Dark coloured liquids such as coffee/tea, red wine and soy sauce.
• Dark coloured foods such as dark chocolate, beetroot and tomato sauces.
• Regular and prolonged use of chlorhexidine mouthwash
• Tetracycline antibiotics when taken under the age of 12
The bleaching agent used in teeth whitening gels has the ability to penetrate the porous enamel layer of teeth and break down the staining agents that are causing the teeth to be stained.
The end result, a brighter whiter smile that you can be confident about.

Boutique Teeth Whitening
There are two main whitening agents used in Boutique teeth whitening gels. These are the most commonly used agents for whitening teeth because they work very well and are safe to use.
The whitening agents are hydrogen peroxide and carbamide peroxide.
There are two main active ingredients used for teeth whitening products. These are hydrogen peroxide and carbamide peroxide.
These can be prescribed in different concentrations depending on your needs.
The Boutique By Day uses 6% hydrogen peroxide as its active ingredient.
Hydrogen peroxide breaks down faster than carbamide peroxide and releases most of its whitening power within the first hour of use. It is designed for people who wear the whitening trays want to get results with minimum wear time.
The Boutique By Night uses 10% or 15% carbamide peroxide.
Carbamide peroxide breaks down slowly into hydrogen peroxide, and releases around half of its whitening power within the first two hours of wear and will remain active for an additional 6 hours afterwards.
It’s designed for people who want great teeth whitening results without the inconvenience of wearing trays during the day. This is most suited for patients who prefer to wear teeth whitening trays overnight.
Teeth Whitening Appointments
Before you whiten your teeth, the dentist will need to examine your teeth to ensure that the gums are healthy and that your teeth are free from any dental cavities. Other checks are carried out to make sure that teeth whitening is suitable for your teeth.
The dentist might take a shade of your teeth. This would allow the dentist to track the progress of your teeth whitening in future appointments.
After the examinations are all carried out, the first stage of treatment would be to take dental impressions of your teeth. After around 2 weeks, custom made whitening trays are returned to the practice ready to be used to whiten your teeth.
The whitening trays are back and you’re excited to start whitening your teeth. First step, we’ll check the trays fit nicely on your teeth without any discomfort. Then the dentist go over all the details on how to safely carry out teeth whitening.

Important Information about Teeth Whitening
What about the whitening gel kits you buy online?
In the UK, teeth whitening should only be carried out under the supervision of a GDC registered dental professional. It is illegal for online stores to be offering teeth whitening services. This is primarily for your safety. When buying from unverified online sources, there is no way of verifying the whitening agents used and their concentrations in the gels. Too low a concentration and there won’t be any whitening effect. Too high a concentration can cause permanent damage to your teeth and gums. Don’t put your teeth at risk, it’s really not worth it. When conducted professionally, it is a very safe procedure with predictable results.
The truth about teeth whitening toothpastes
Tried all the whitening toothpastes and still not getting the results you really want? You’re not alone. Many people use teeth whitening toothpastes hoping to whiten their teeth yet are left disappointed with the results. At best, teeth whitening toothpastes remove some of the external staining on your teeth due the abrasives that are used in the toothpaste. This however has no effect on the natural colour of your teeth and will therefore not whiten your teeth. We do not recommend the use of whitening toothpastes over a prolonged period as this can cause permanent damage and sensitivity to your teeth, especially if they are highly abrasive toothpastes.
The importance of custom-made trays for teeth whitening
DIY kits are available online and in some retail shops to make your own whitening trays. We strongly advise against using these as they are likely to fit poorly on your teeth. Such trays can be harmful to your teeth and produce unpredictable results. The gel is more likely to contact your gums and cause irritation. Also, it will unlikely apply the gel uniformly on your teeth, which will result in certain patches whitening more than others. Custom-made perfectly fitting trays are essential for predictable and safe teeth whitening results.
Is teeth whitening suitable for everyone?
It is important that you seek professional advice from a dental professional as in some cases, teeth whitening is not recommended. • You have to be above the age of 18. • As a precaution, teeth whitening is not advisable for pregnant and breastfeeding woman. • If your teeth are highly susceptible to cold sensitivity, it is strongly recommended that you seek professional dental advice regarding suitability for whitening treatment. • All outstanding treatments such as gums disease and dental cavities must be addressed first before teeth whitening. • Bleaching only whitens tooth enamel and does not change the colour of existing white fillings, crowns and implants. Therefore, if you have such restorations that are visible when you smile, teeth whitening may not be suitable. Your dentist will be able to advise you further.
